Plant Protein.

We saw in Chapter 2 (Cramps and PMS) that a serving of plant protein as you start your breakfast can help stabilize moods for the rest of the say. At least that is what many women have reported. Although this has been suggested as a treatment for PMS, it also makes sense to put it to work for depression.
Many cultures have high-protein plant-based foods for breakfast: beans on toast in England, black beans in Mexico, and hummus in the Middle East.

I would suggest starting your breakfast with grilled tempeh, scrambled tofu, veggie bacon, veggie sausage, soymilk, or a small serving of beans or chickpeas. You do not need much. Starchier foods—toast, oatmeal, bagels—are fine, but have the plant-protein food first.

This does not mean that you are protein-deficient. A vegan diet brings you plenty of protein. We are just taking advantage of a mood-stabilizing effect that seems to come from plant proteins consumed early in a meal. Remember: we are speaking of plant-based proteins, not bacon, sausage, eggs, etc. Animal-based foods cause the very problems we are trying to fix.
