Top 5 Hated Foods List (with substitutions) + How to Transition Your Family to Plant-Centered Meals

Posted by:Lindsay S. Nixon Category: MealPlan

Are there some foods you don’t like?

You’re definitely not alone!

When I asked our members:

“Was there a food you didn't like but after you began preparing Meal Mentor meals, your tastes changed and you like it now?"

These were the most common answers:

  1. Mushrooms
  2. Cauliflower
  3. Sweet Potatoes
  4. Lentils
  5. Bell Peppers

I hated mushrooms too!! (Zucchini or eggplant is a good substitute) but now LOVE them.

Potatoes are a great stand-in for cauliflower.

Use carrots or butternut instead of sweet potatoes.

Beans or walnuts work great instead of lentils (I also like sorghum).

And bell peppers? Just omit them. Or use a vegetable you do like, such as broccoli.

It took my family a long time to love healthy vegan food.

Our diet was all chicken nuggets, pizzas, cereal, and doughnuts for so long that a kale salad felt radical.

HOW TO TRANSITION YOUR FAMILY?

  1. Start with familiar foods like pasta and tacos.

Like this week's Israeli Pasta Salad from Meal Mentor.

  2. Add vegetables to a favorite dish.
  3. Serve healthier versions of a family favorite.

Take for example theseLazy Lentil Enchiladas and Italian Club Sandwiches from Meal Mentor meal plan this week.

Offering up "new" foods to a picky omni family can cause more stress than you have energy for in the beginning.

Choosing types of meals or flavors your family already knows and likes helps reduce anxiety over the change.

And don't feel bad serving a plant-based dish with a side of chicken or shredded cheese.

TONS of our members do that or got started that way.

Other recipes on this week's meal plan include:

  • TJ's Copycat Red Lentil Wraps
  • Veronica's "Tuna" Rolls (NEW!)
  • Queso'd Quinoa
  • Artichoke Po'Boys
  • Diana's Thai'd Up Potatoes (NEW!)
  • EZ Enchiladas (NEW!)
  • Blueberry Cobbler ONOs
  • Theresa's Pineapple Upside Down Shakes (NEW!)
  • Sweet Corn Risotto
