10 Signs You Need a Detox

Posted by:Lindsay S. Nixon

How do you know if your body (and mind) needs a detox?

To honor my body, I try to do a detox every couple of months, even if I don’t think or feel like I need it before starting.

It always becomes clear to me by Day 2 that I was not living as optimally as I thought I was and I definitely DID need a reset.

From low-grade anxiety, to irregular BMs, to the sniffles, or head fog, a detox always shows me I wasn’t living as optimally as I would have liked.

Of course, there are times I’m aware something is just a little off and I know I need to reboot, but even when I think I’m “all good” doing a detox helped me see I was often putting up with some minor annoyances when I didn’t have to, or that I’d gotten so used to the sniffles, cravings, restlessness, (whatever) I thought they were normal (!)

Above all, I’m always happy I took the time to commit to myself and my health.
That’s why I detox quarterly and also why I host a yearly group Detox Challenge.

It’s a great way to start the New Year off right and it’s so much fun to do it with friends and other people and make it a social thing.

I’ve also created a brand new Detox meal plan for 2019 with all new recipes!

You can preorder the Detox Plan as a PDF here or get it for free in the App when you start your membership.

The Detox Plan will be available in the App (and for download if you’re purchasing the PDF version) on December 30th.

We’ll start together as a group on Wednesday, January 2nd. If that’s too soon for you, that’s okay, there will be a second group starting Monday, January 7th.

So, should you join me and my posse for our yearly Detox Challenge? Check out the 10 signs below to find out!

10 Signs You Need a Detox

1. Digestive stress.

Digestive issues are a major red flag that your body is not functioning properly.

If you are experiencing bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or any other stomach issues, a detox could do wonders for you.

A week of super healthy, simple plant-based meals can help you give your body a break and hit the reset button on your digestive health!

2. Uncontrollable food cravings.

Our bodies and brains have been hijacked by the sugar and fast food industry.

Even the smallest bit of sugar can throw our hormones out of whack and make us constantly crave junk food and sweets.

My sugar-free, hormone harmonizing detox can help you reprogram your body (and your brain), and get rid of food cravings once and for all!

3. Feeling sluggish or fatigued.

Constantly feeling sluggish, fatigued, or exhausted, is not normal. It may even be a sign of adrenal fatigue.

If you are constantly feeling lethargic, apathetic, or simply exhausted, a detox will help you renew and recharge your cells and spirit. Kick the new year off right… with energy and enthusiasm!

4. Mood swings.

Holidays can be a stressful time, but experiencing unexpected mood swings could be a sign that something else is going on.

If you are experiencing anger, irritability, or anything else out of the ordinary, your hormones could be to blame. Food is the biggest factor that affects hormones, even more than stress! Happy hormones are made from health-promoting foods.

5. An increase in anxiety/depression symptoms.

If we are not treating our bodies right, our mental health can take a real beating. Plus when we feel bad, we think we are bad, which leads to shame cycles and negative self-talk.

If your depression or anxiety symptoms have increased in severity or frequency, taking some time to detox your body (and mind) could help!

Eating simple, fresh foods not only makes your body feel good, but you feel good about yourself and your choices. Then when your body starts to feel better, your mind follows along too. The mind-gut connection is powerful!

6. Weight gain.

There’s nothing wrong with a little indulging.

However, the holiday season sometimes brings with it unwelcome weight gain with too much merry indulgence.

A detox can be a great way to shed the holiday pounds and start the new year off strong!

6. Getting sick.

If you are experiencing the sniffles or feeling the need to constantly clear your throat, your immune system is definitely screaming for a detox.

Trust me: a few days of healthy, plant-based food, and you will feel as good as new!

8. Poor sleep.

Sleep affects everything else in your life, from cravings to energy levels.

Insomnia or irregular sleep patterns could be a sign you need to take a break from your normal routine and take some time to detox your body AND your mind.

9. Hormonal problems.

Hormone problems can manifest themselves in a number of different ways, including acne and other skin issues, irregular periods, difficulty losing weight, etc.

If the problems persist, see a doctor. However, you might be surprised how much a detox can do to help!

It always amazes me how I can visually look 5 to 10 pounds trimmer if I remove all the bloat and inflammation caused by eating and drinking the wrong foods.

10. Muscle/joint pain

Aches, stiffness, and joint pain aren’t just a part of getting older.

They are a sign of inflammation - something that a detox can really help you with! Anytime I start to feel stiff or sore I know I need more greens and anti-inflammatory foods.
