“Fish” & Chips
Jun 19th, 2008 by Lindsay
A vegan version of the popular British “fast-food.” The tofu fish sticks recipe comes from Schmooed Food, but for a more authentic fish and chips experience (read: crispy, battered fish) use 2/3 cup crushed unsweetened corn flakes in place of the almonds. Serve the “fish” alongside a batch of baked steak fries, replace ketchup with vinegar and you’ll be talking with a British accent in no time! Cheers!

Oven Baked Steak Fries
2 Idaho potatoes, sliced into 1/2″-thick slices
Safflower oil spray can
freshly milled sea salt (or other fine salt)
Directions:
Preheat 425F
1. place fries in a single layer on a cookie sheet
2. lightly spray with oil
3. sprinkle with sea salt
4. bake 10 minutes
5. remove from oven and flip fries, spray and salt
6. bake for another 15 minutes or until potatoes are golden and crispy
(the fries in the photo are “shoe string” style - Scott doesn’t like steak fries style)

I haven’t eaten the traditional British fish & chips in YEARS (obviously, haha) - be sure to serve them with malt vinegar!! Can’t ruin them with ketchup or tartar sauce!! :0)
I’ve never been a fan of fish, its smell or flavor, but your sticks look delicious nonetheless!
I love how those cute little Brits call their fries chips. It makes me smile. And so does that tofu…
Vegan fish & chips….the PERFECT dish for me!! Looks delicious, Lindsay (as usual…)!!
I’ve tried that recipe before, it was great.
Do we technically have to roll them in newspaper to really be British?
Looks & sounds great!
I do say, that looks proper for consuming with a (vegan) pint of the black stuff (spoken with a British accent)! Seriously though, that looks wicked good!
It’s funny, as am omni I never ate fish, thought it was nasty! But tofu ‘fish’ rocks my world! I love how your breading looks in the photo - really authentic!
Thanks for the comments everyone — they make my day!
*VeggieGirl, indeed!! malt vinegar is the only way to go!
*Romina, its not too fishy, you could omit the kelp too.
*Shellyfish, haha! you’re so right!
*Rural, same here! I refused to eat “tuna” as an omni but I love mock tuna salad!!
*Alec, lol! love it! greeeeeeat comment.
this looks really, really good! and those fries??!!! mmmmmmmmmmm!
Mmmm, looks so nice and crispy!!
Looks delicious! I did have authentic fish & chips before I went veggie, so greasy yet so good. And the mushy peas! Can’t forget them. I have to say I go with ketchup as a condiment though, no vinegar for me.
